Have you noticed the marked difference in our Downtown gateways? Starting with Indy Do Day and continuing through the month of October, these dark, dank, tunnel-like streets were transformed.
When you traversed them this summer or before, like me, maybe you thought the Billy Goat Gruff would leap out and head-butt you. Or, maybe you imagined a troll, and not the cute ones with colorful tufts of hair sprouting from their heads, demanding a toll to walk through.
Well thanks to commissioned artists and volunteers, the underpasses have been significantly improved.
Through a partnership between Downtown Indy, Arts Council of Indianapolis and Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, six bridge underpasses were recently painted to create an attractive link between Downtown and surrounding neighborhoods.
More than 270 volunteers gave nearly 3,000 hours and painted more than 50,000 square-feet.
The artwork has diminished the darkness and created a vibrant corridor. Take a walk or a Pacers Bike Share ride and admire the work at these locations:
Alabama St. under I-65
College Avenue under I-65
Vermont St. under I-65/I-70
New York St. under I-65/I-70
Michigan St. under I-65/I-70
East Washington St. under I-65
White River Trail under I-70
Madison Avenue at Lilly Corporate Headquarters
The more we use these spaces, the better overall experience for everyone. Let’s keep the trolls and goats at bay.
