I have been known to festival hop in the summer – you know, go from an art fair, to a beer festival, to a live music celebration all in one day. But festival hopping will reach an entirely new level during the weekend of June 12 – 14, when five of Indy’s top festivals are taking place. Got a lake trip planned? Cancel it. Have a wedding to go to? Find a way out. This could perhaps be the best weekend in June ever.
Italian Street Festival: June 12 & 13, 5-11 p.m.
Thousands of people will gather in the streets outside Holy Rosary Catholic Church (near East and Stevens Streets) to enjoy Italian food, wine and beer, live music and children’s amusement rides. Entertainment includes the Indy Nile Band, Greta Speaks, The Woomblies and headliner The Flying Toasters. Hint: bring your dancing shoes. Admission is free and food tickets cost $1 each.
Circle City IN Pride Festival: June 13, 10 a.m.-7 p.m.
Join 95,000 other people for Indiana’s largest LGBT celebration. Circle City IN Pride Festival takes place at American Legion Mall and includes four stages of live performances, with country star Chely Wright as this year’s headliner. This year, history will be made when CCIP hosts a public marriage ceremony – Indy Pride’s Big Happy Wedding – on the main stage. Couples also have the option for a more private ceremony in a chapel. Start the day by watching the Cadillac Barbie IN Pride Parade at the corner of Mass Ave and College Ave at 10 a.m. Don’t miss the events taking place during the week leading up to the festival including Rainbow 5K Run/Walk on June 6 and Diversity Night with The Fever on June 7.
PBS Kids in the Park: June 13, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Schools out for the summer… now what? Take your kids to PBS Kids in the Park, a free festival in Military Park. About 20 different characters from popular PBS shows wander around the park, meeting up with their adoring fans and posing for photos. Factor in live music, vendor booths and food trucks and there’s no denying children of all ages will be in their happy place.
Talbot Street Art Fair: June 13, 10 a.m.–6 p.m. and June 14, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
More than 270 artists from across the nation gather on the north side of Downtown Indy each summer for the Talbot Street Art Fair, continually ranked as one of the top art fairs in the U.S. Browse all kinds of art: ceramics, photography, jewelry, glass and more. The fair is free to attend and offers entertainment and exhibits for all ages to enjoy.
INDIEana Handicraft Exchange: June 13, noon-8 p.m.
After you explore the Talbot Street Art Fair, walk across the street for the INDIEana Handicraft Exchange. Vendors include clothing and jewelry designers, as well as some of Indiana’s favorite names (I can’t wait to see the new styles of t-shirts and home accessories United State of Indiana has been working on). Besides the jam-packed craft show and unique artwork, the festival also coincides with the Independent Music + Art Festival. Both events take place at the Harrison Center for the Arts and admission is free.
